Brad's Story
Brad started on guitar at age 12 with a truly terrible instrument that lives in an attic somewhere like the picture of Dorian Gray. Upon receiving a working guitar at age 15, he rapidly progressed into a finger-style obsession, much to the chagrin of high school girlfriends. Learning off recordings, Brad soon mastered many tunes by Leo Kottke and John Fahey before heading off to college.
Young people specialize in poor decisions, and Brad was no exception. While in school Brad started working with local musicians to stay sane and pay rent. He picked up electric guitar upon hearing Mark Knopfler and Jerry Garcia, and soon was working with Boston-area bands and songwriters full time, 5 nights a week. He learned a lot from older musicians, not all of it advisable or legal. He completed a degree in electrical engineering, which means that he knows all three of Ohm's laws.
Brad moved to Portland in 1990 and began working on the local country scene with Red Bandana before joining the Trail Band with Marv and Rindy Ross, recording several albums with the group from 1996 to 2000. Along the way, Brad was working with and producing local artists such as Maureen Andrews and Donna Jose. The 2000s were a time of child-rearing and home-making, but Brad kept up a weekend schedule at haunts such as the Mock Crest in NoPo so the kids would always remember what real cigarette smoke smells like.
Today Brad works with several Portland ensembles: The Tabor Mountain Boys, Brooks Hill and The Fabulous Deck Boys. He is writing his best material and trying to reduce the number of bands with the word "boys" in it.
